Prolotherapy is a treatment method that provides proliferation and regeneration in the tissues and allows them to regain their strength through the injections of proliferative (cell and tissue regenerative) and irritant solutions (dextrose or mannitol; both derived from natural sugar, lidocaine-local anesthetic) into tendons, ligaments and joints that are weakened, worn, damaged, loosened and lost strength.
Injected proliferative solutions ensure the regeneration and strengthening of the tissues by causing inflammation in the joints, the joints of tendons with muscles, and the places where tendons and ligaments connect to the bones. This inflammatory process activates the body's healing mechanisms. Regeneration occurs in tendons, ligaments, and cartilages. Following this, joint, tendon, ligament and muscle pain are relieved.
FOR WHICH DISEASES IS PROLOTHERAPY USED AS A TREATMENT?
IN HOW MANY SESSIONS IS PROLOTHERAPY APPLIED?
The number of sessions depends on the condition of the patient, the disease, and many other factors. Additional problems such as the patient's age, weight and duration of the disease, the extent and level of the damage, diabetes, hypothyroidism, metabolic syndrome, obesity, smoking and drinking alcohol prolongs the recovery period. 4-6 sessions are sufficient for most patients, while significant improvements are seen in some patients in 1-2 sessions and 8-10 sessions may be required to get results in some patients.
WHAT ARE THE RULES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THE PATIENT AFTER THE PROLOTHERAPY TREATMENT?
Do NOT take painkillers involving the class of drugs called NSAIDs, such as Naproxen, Flurbiprofen, Diclofenac, Etodolac, Meloxicam. Apranax, Majezik, Voltaren, Etol, and Melox can be given as examples of brand names that include those drugs. Those painkillers, which have anti-inflammatory effects, eliminate the effect of prolotherapy. If you feel a lot of pain, you can take painkillers from the paracetamol group (Parol, Minoset) or tramadol group (Contramal, Zaldiar) that we will prescribe for you. You can consult us about this issue.
After the prolotherapy procedure, apply a warm compress to the treated area for a duration of 20 minutes in every 3 hours for the first 3 days. This application increases the benefit you will receive from the prolotherapy. (You can do this application with hot water bags that you can buy from pharmacies. Since diabetics or elderly patients with decreased sensation may not feel the warmness during the application, their skin may burn. Please be careful.)
